Talking Points Memo and Podcast

Inspired by early political bloggers like Mickey Kaus and Andrew Sullivan, Marshall launched Talking Points Memo during the tumultuous 2000 Florida recount, seeing an opportunity for more candid, independent political commentary. “I really liked what felt like the freedom of expression in this form of writing,” he once said in an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review.

In early 2001, he left his role at The American Prospect and dedicated himself full-time to blogging while contributing to outlets such as The Washington Monthly, The New Yorker, Salon, and The Atlantic. His pivotal coverage in 2002 of Senator Trent Lott’s praise of segregationist Strom Thurmond played a key role in Lott’s resignation as Senate Minority Leader, according to Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

As readership surged—from 8,000 to over 60,000 daily visitors—Marshall began monetizing the blog, eventually earning $10,000 per month by late 2004. By the 2008 U.S. presidential election, TPM experienced explosive growth, with monthly traffic jumping from 32,000 unique visitors in September 2007 to 458,000 by September 2008, a remarkable 1,321% increase.

TPM Media Expansion

In 2005, Marshall launched TPMCafe, a collaborative platform hosting commentary from scholars, journalists, and former public officials on both domestic and foreign policy.

In 2006, he expanded again with the launch of TPMmuckraker, a blog focused on investigating political corruption. Initially staffed by Paul Kiel and Justin Rood, the site gained recognition for its detailed analysis of legislative document dumps and government cover-ups. TPMmuckraker has since brought in new voices, including Laura McGann and Spencer Ackerman.

Today, TPM Media is headquartered in Manhattan and employs a team of journalists, including a Washington-based bureau.
