Welcome to the Pumwani Maternity College of Nursing and Midwifery (PCNM), where our history is as legendary as the stork's delivery service. Established way back in 1927, we've been bringing midwifery magic to Kenya since before emojis existed. Originally known as the African Maternity, we rebranded to Pumwani, which is also the name of our lively surrounding area.
In the roaring 1920s, the Lady Grigg Welfare League came to the rescue to secure midwives for the Lady Grigg African Hospital. Pumwani Maternity College of Nursing and Midwifery training was basically a maternity Hogwarts—no broomsticks, but lots of baby delivery spells. Our first African midwifery prodigies graduated in 1934, learning to read and write in Kiswahili. By 1943, the entry requirement was basically being a Kiswahili bookworm. The government took us under its nurturing wing in 1944, and we've been delivering future midwives ever since.
Fast forward to 1950 when the Nurses Act was passed, and the Nurses, Midwives, and Health Visitor's Council of Kenya was born. Our first batch strutted into the roll of midwives examination in 1953. Back then, fresh school leavers were shaping up as midwifery superheroes for two years, while enrolled nurses were in the speedy one-year lane.
In 1973, the two-year program waved goodbye, making room for the prestigious Diploma in Midwifery. Then, in 2007, we kicked off the basic course in KRNM, a 3.5-year extravaganza, later slimming it down to 3 years in 2019.
Hold onto your stethoscopes, folks! Presently, we're offering two dazzling diploma programs—Post Basic Midwifery and Basic Nursing and Midwifery. And guess what? We've added a spicy five-month certificate course in Reproductive Health. Brace yourselves for more exciting courses coming your way in the future. Pumwani, where history and humor mix in the perfect delivery.
