While attending high school, Eddie formed a music group with classmates Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey, and Bill Isles called The Triumphs. They began performing at local events in Canton, including school dances and “sock hops.” A trip to Cincinnati led them to King Records, where President Sid Nathan signed them and renamed the group The Mascots. Their growing popularity earned them regular airplay on Cleveland radio.
In 1969, the group signed with Philadelphia International Records and began releasing music under their new name, The O’Jays. Later, they joined EMI-Manhattan Records, where Eddie and bandmate Walter Williams took creative control, co-writing and producing many of their hits. Their EMI debut album Let Me Touch You climbed to No. 3 on the R&B charts and featured the smash hit “Lovin’ You,” a No. 1 R&B single in 1987.
In 1984, Eddie’s sons Gerald and Sean, both still in high school at the time, decided to pursue music. Along with Marc Gordon, they formed the group LeVert, which went on to achieve remarkable success—four of their seven albums were certified platinum. In 1992, Eddie and Gerald collaborated on the hit single “Baby Hold On to Me,” which became a No. 1 R&B hit and reached No. 37 on the Pop chart.
Tragedy struck in 2006 when Eddie’s son Gerald passed away following complications related to prescribed medications shortly after a family tour in South Africa. In 2007, their joint album Something to Talk About was released, followed by their co-authored book I Got Your Back. Just a year later, Eddie’s younger son Sean died while in custody, after being denied access to essential medication.
Despite the heartbreak, Eddie’s legacy was honored. In 2008, he and Gerald posthumously received the NAACP Image Award for “Best Duo or Group.” The following year, The O’Jays were recognized with BET’s “Lifetime Achievement Award.” Additional accolades followed, including the “Heroes and Legends Pacesetter Award” and the “Trumpet Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2011.
Over the years, The O’Jays have released ten gold albums—nine of which went platinum—and scored ten No. 1 hits. Eddie Levert continues to tour with The O’Jays and also performs as a solo artist, maintaining his legendary status in the music industry.
